Magazine Library, Print Culture, and Manizales’ Poster Promotions

We’re experimenting with this new post format again, trying to give you more bang for your buck in terms of offering a daily snapshot of what’s happening in the world of PechaKucha, and trying to save you from the endless streams of feed notifications that seem to clutter our lives.

Presentations
As we recently covered on the blog, we had a special PechaKucha event this past Friday here in Tokyo, as part of the 10th edition of the Magazine Library exhibition. We invited 5 presenters to cover topics that touch on magazines and print culture, and we’ll be sharing all of them online today and tomorrow. Today, you get to hear Audrey Fondecave talk about the upcoming issue of TOO MUCH (”the magazine of romantic geography”), Mike Abelson talk about his stationery brand Postalco, and a recent printing project he embarked on, and Luis Mendo tells us how Tokyo turned this editorial designer into an artist.

We’ve got another new batch of PKN posters and flyers up on our Tumblr blog, including a few examples of what was produced for PKN Manizales Vol. 1 (above, a flyer), as well as from PKN Muscat Vol. 1, PKN Beirut Vol. 13, PKN Buffalo Vol. 12, PKN Cagliari Vol. 2, and PKN Moscow Vol. 12.

Event Photos
We know you love seeing event photos — to get a feel for how PKNs are being done around the world — and we’re going to be sharing even more, by posting links to even more galleries than in the past. Pictured above, a scene from March’s PKN Sao Paulo Vol. 10, as well as a few happy attendees during the beer break.

Links
A few PechaKucha-related links from around the webosphere.

  • A fun call-for-entries video (above) for the upcoming PKNs (Vol. 2 and 3) in Genoa
  • An interview (in Russian) with our friends from PKN Moscow at Theoryandpractice
  • We don’t usually like to give too much instructions on how to do a presentation — we like to see how each person approaches the format — but for those in need a few tips, this post might help

Calendar
It’s a quiet Monday with no PechaKucha Nights happening tonight, but tomorrow night, Helsingborg will be hosting its PechaKucha Night Vol. 8, happening at the Helsingborgs Stadsteater.

This Friday (March 23), Warsaw will be celebrating its 10th PechaKucha Night. PechaKucha Night in Warsaw Vol. 8 is happening tomorrow (September 1), and here are a few more details on what to expect from organizer Dorota Szopowska:

Tomorrow’s PKN Warsaw Vol.8 will take place at the Copernicus Science Centre. We will kick off the “Changes Festival,” and the theme of the evening will be RIVER. We expect linguists, architects, biologists, travelers and others. The event will take place in the Centre’s garden, with Vistula river as background. The poster was designed by Marcin Kolorski, who was participant at one of our events last year.

Warsaw’s PechaKucha Night Vol. 7 is just around the corner, happening this Thursday (June 2), and the poster above was designed by Ada Buchholc, who was a presenter at PKN Warsaw Vol. 5. This event will mark the end of “The Plans for the Future” architectural exhibition, that was organized by Centrum Lowicka.

Warsaw will be hosting its next PechaKucha Night (Vol. 6) later this month (March 18) at Ósmy Dzień Tygodnia (8th Day of the Week) Club, a new cultural spot in the city — the event is not yet listed on the official city page, but should be up later, so check again for more details and the list of presenters. The logo-heavy poster was designed by Piotrek Chuchla, who was a presenter at PKN Warsaw Vol. 5.

PKN Warsaw Vol. 3

From the looks of things, it was another terrific — despite the uncooperative weather — PechaKucha Night for Warsaw courtesy of this past month’s Vol. 3, and here’s another great report from organizer Dorota Szopowska.

We were expecting a spring, cloudless sky, singing birds and relaxing on deckchairs. Instead, on May 14th it rained from the morning till evening. Till 7.30pm, nothing has changed, so we unfolded deckchairs under a small shelter in the garden. Fortunately the guests came with umbrellas. Those who decided to stay inside (and lie down comfortably on the cushions) could follow presentations on special screens. We are very happy that so many people turned up. The third PechaKucha evening in Warsaw was very successful. The variety of presentations and great atmosphere resulted in congratulations and questions about the next event. During the evening we were accompanied by our partner and sponsor, MINI Auto Fus.

PechaKucha Night in Warsaw Vol. 3 is coming up in a few weeks, set to happen outdoors on May 14 in Centrum LOWICKA’s garden — hopefully combining a clear spring evening sky with cold beer and deck chairs! The poster was designed by Piotr Holub, who was a presenter at PKN Warsaw Vol. 2.
