Victoria

Video from PKN Victoria Vol. 9

We’ve been finding a lot of nice video reports of late, and here’s another one, this time for PechaKucha Night in Victoria Vol. 9, which was held earlier this month. You’ll find the full list of presenters with links on the official event page.

PKN Victoria Up for an Award

Big congratulations go out to the organizers of PechaKucha Night in Victoria for being nominated as part of the Monday Mag M Awards. Here’s co-organizer Elisa Yon with more on the nomination.

We are not going to pretend that we don’t care about awards, cuz we do! PechaKucha Night Victoria has been nominated in the M Award category for BEST MULTIMEDIA EVENT. We are honoured to have been recognized by our local community, and it would be vegan icing on the cake to win the prestigious M Award. Even if it’s likely to be an award that’s drinkable or edible! The Monday Mag is THE local weekly arts and entertainment (free) newspaper. It is quite a popular publication as it offers a round up of what’s happening in the local arts and culture scene. Every year they host an awards ceremony to recognize Victoria’s visual, literary and performing artists. This year will their 9th Annual M Awards.

We are in the voting stage at the moment. If you’d like to vote for us you can. To vote from your couch, visit this link, skip to the Multi-Media category and cast your vote.

PKN Victoria Vol. 5

Poster for PKN Victoria Vol. 5

Victoria held its PechaKucha Night Vol. 5 earlier this month, and here we have a report on the event courtesy of co-organizer Elisa Yon. We also include the posters and flyer that were produced for the event, and you’ll find the list of presenters with links on the official event page.

PechaKucha Night Victoria Vol. 5 on February 10, 2011 was another lovely evening of inspiring presentations from locally sourced designers, documentary filmmakers, and visual artists. The Victoria Event Centre played host to about 150 people in the audience. After 5 volumes, 60 presentations, 1200 slides, and over 700 people who have attended our events, we feel very humbled by the experience.

The poster design for Vol. 5 was kindly provided by choliDESIGN, a small but talented group of design professionals who have recently embarked on a new project called the Get Fresh Guide, connecting local eaters with growers, producers, suppliers and supporters of fresh, local foods on Vancouver Island.

Video Report on PKN Victoria Vol. 4

PechaKucha Night in Victoria Vol. 4 was held a few days ago, and despite the bad weather, co-organizer Elisa Yon tells us that it was still a great event with about a hundred braving the storm. As always, here’s a video report from the event, courtesy of Anonymous Advertising — you’ll find the full list of presenters with links on the official event page.

PechaKucha Self-Portraits

Elisa Yon is the organizer of PechaKucha Night in Victoria, and she’s been experimenting with the PK 20×20 format a bit, as described below:

Elisa Yon, who organized Victoria’s Pecha Kucha night, is now in her first year of the MAA program at Emily Carr. Elisa is an architect who won an architectural design competition that led to her representing Scotland at the 2008 Venice Biennale, so she had no shortage of professional accomplishments to share with her fellow students and faculty. But in her getting-to-know-me Pecha Kucha presentation, she began not with the usual approach of showing slides of her work, but instead shared slides that others had sent her. Elisa asked some important people in her life to send her images that said something about her, and in speaking to those slides, Elisa spoke volumes about her work, character and key relationships.

Based on that experience, Elisa is now experimenting with Pecha Kucha as a way of curating self-portraits using contributed images. She’s asked for my help, and I have agreed to solicit 20 images from different people who know me — some well, some not so well– in order to build a collective picture. It’s kind of like a 360 evaluation based on creative feedback rather than analytic feedback.

Seeing Double at PKN Victoria

Seeing Double at PKN Victoria

Above is an intriguing photo from the last PechaKucha Night in Victoria (Vol. 3), taken by local photographer BigTinySmalls. As requested by organizer Elisa Yon, it will soon be adorning the PechaKucha Night city loop — that’s the loop of city photos you see at the start (and sometimes during the beer break) of PKNs. Also take note that PKN Victoria Vol. 4 happens later this month (November 25) at the Victoria Event Centre — you’ll find the full list of presenters with links on the official event page.

PKN Victoria in the News

PechaKucha Night in Victoria Vol. 3

You may remember when we posted the video from Victoria’s recent PechaKucha Night Vol. 3 that the theme for the event was “Thought for Food,” and so it’s not so surprising to see that EAT magazine covered the event — you can read the article here.

Short Video from PKN Victoria Vol. 3

Here’s a short video sneak peek at last week’s PechaKucha Night in Victoria Vol. 3, which had the theme of “Thought for Food.” Even better, free food and cocktails were available for all, as organizer Elisa Yon explains.

The evening had our best attendance yet. 200 people crammed into the Victoria Event Centre to listen to 13 presenter’s talk about burgers, food composting, a new downtown permanent food and produce market, food stylism, food photography, local food entrepreneurs and wood fired ovens made out of cob. We were also able to use the profits from our last two PechaKucha Nights to provide complimentary food and support a local food entrepreuneur, Heather Cunliffe from Cafe Bliss who specializes in raw and organic foods.

PKN Victoria Vol. 2

Victoria held its latest PechaKucha Night (Vol. 2) at the end of May, and here are a few photos from the event — there’s more to see in this Flickr photoset. The next PKN in Victoria (Vol. 3) is scheduled for July 13, again at the Victoria Event Centre. If you’re wondering what the “10×10″ sign is all about, see the video here.

PKN Victoria’s 10×10

PechaKucha Night in Victoria Vol. 2 was held just a few days ago, and at the end of the night, organizers and event sponsor Anonymous Advertising produced a short “10×10″ video, which sees 10 attendees explain in 10 seconds what they took away from the event. Some pretty fun reactions all around.
