Rethinking Design, Some Animation Love, and the Aalen Poster Explosion

http://desmeem.com/

Presentations
Doreen Toutikian thinks that design can change the world for the better, and that’s what she hopes to achieve with her “Rethinking Design Through Cross-Cultural Collaboration” project — see her describe it in this presentation from PKN Beirut Vol. 13. Sebastian Alvarez loves animation, and that could help explain how he ended up becoming an animator. He uses this presentation (from PKN Miami Vol. 14) to describe the main principles behind animation, and shows how all animated forms (2D, CG) can be used to tell stories in original and creative ways.

PKN Aalen Vol. 2

Posters
We found this Facebook gallery of posters for Aalen’s past PKNs, and so have added a few of them (the ones we’d never seen before) to our Tumblr blog – and that’s the one for PKN Aalen Vol. 2 you see pictured above. We’ve also added the poster for this week’s PKN Portland, Maine Vol. 19 — next up for the city is the momentous Vol. 20!

PKN Maribor Vol. 7

Photos
Today’s photo galleries, as well as an event report. The photo above is from PKN Maribor Vol. 7.

PKN Sacramento organizer Claire Obenson reports on the city’s recent Vol. 17:

There were presentations from creative professions across the spectrum, such as a playwright, David Blue Garrison, host of the event, who showed posters of his work; there was Andrea Lepore, the creative director for a well known restaurant, Hot Italian, who showed her plans for a well known strip, called Del Paso Blvd; we had Melissa Magliola who showed off her new company, Compliment Rings, whose proceeds “give back” to the community; Veronica Delgado, the great publicist and Artist Agent showed off her endeavours and volunteering efforts; Famed architect, Owen T. Jones presented images about “inside versus outside” spaces; Dennis Dong, another famed architect and PK Night veteran presenter showed off his anonymous spaces and lastly, Marvin Maldonado presented images from his wife’s new boutique, Gypsy Mobile Boutique, Sacramento’s first mobile boutique.

Overall, this was one of the most interesting PK Nights we have ever held and thanks to all who participated!

Calendar
Tonight (May 22) you’ll find your PKN action in Montreal (Vol. 22), Dnipropetrovsk (Vol.1), and Dundee (Vol. 3), while tomorrow (May 23) you can look to these events for some PKN satisfaction: PKN Prague Vol. 29, PKN Ekaterinburg Vol. 3, PKN Leksand Vol. 4, and PKN Copenhagen’s very special Vol. 20.

Architectural Tips in Catania, a Zen Approach to Life, and the Reason PechaKucha Is Great for You

We’re trying something a bit different today, and instead of producing a few separate posts, we’re creating a one-stop post with all of the day’s news and interesting links. Do let us know what you think.

Emanuele Fidone

Presentations
First off, of course, comes the presentations. As we’ve been doing lately, we’ve added two new presentations: Hear Emanuele Fidone cover key aspects of architecture as he shares his works (in Italian, from PKN Catania Vol. 10), or let Peter Harris guide you through the inner workings of zen (from PKN Waterville Vol. 6). And if you’ve been wondering just how global our presentations are, this page should clue you in — we have 63 cities represented, with of course new cities sending us presentations every day.

PKN Coruna Vol. 6

Posters
And you do remember about our fantastic PKN poster Tumblr, right? Every single poster we receive from our global organizers goes up there, and today’s additions includes posters/flyers for PKN Coruna Vol. 6, PKN Rockford Vol. 1, PKN Nishinomiya Vol. 12, and PKN Sacramento Vol. 17.

Links
There’s also been some great PechaKucha chatter around the net, and here are a few links that we’d like to share today (and we’ll be sharing more links like this on a regular basis, so keep the coverage coming):

Calendar
Here’s wishing you a fantastic weekend, and don’t forget to check the PechaKucha calendar to find out what PechaKucha Night you can attend over the next few days (hint: we’re in Cleveland, Ferrol, Guatemala City, Lausanne, Manizales, and Bandung tonight, and in Springfield, MO and Helsinki tomorrow).

My True Passion

My True Passion

Today’s presentation, “My True Passion,” was recorded at PechaKucha Night in Sacramento Vol. 16, and features Will Rodriguez as he talks about  how he came to discover what his true passion was in life, and how it affected the way he looked at his creative work.

Here’s a report on the recent PechaKucha Night in Sacramento (Vol. 16), courtesy of organizer Claire Obenson — you’ll find the presenters listed with links on the event page.

Held in a funky little gallery space during Sacramento’s monthly Second Saturday Art Walk, PK Night 16 was a success!

Julie Vatuone, our cool MC introduced the presenters, who included Sculptor, Robert Hossack and his delightful car sculptures; Photographer, Sonia Hidalgo and her stunning photos; Steve Hamm whose presentation consisted of images of quotes from famous people set to rock music; Photographer, Nicholas Wray, with his provocative collection of photographs; Architect, Ian Merker, a witty and interesting presenter and Artist, Raphael Delgado, whose passion for his work was clearly evident throughout his presentation.

Butterscotch Clinton, a beatbox artist who has appeared on America’s Got Talent, sang classy jazz tunes during the intermission.

Lastly, there was Will Rodriguez who did an intriguing presentation on finding one’s passion.

Below, that presentation by Will Rodriguez.

Here we have a few photos from two recent PechaKucha Nights in Sacramento (Vol. 14 and 15), as well as a report, courtesy of organizer Claire Obenson.

The old Crocker Museum side facade provided a striking backdrop for all presentations, which included, “Zombie Architecture” by PK Night MC, Marvin Maldonado and Fashion Design inspired Interior Design by Kerrie Kelly.

There was also intensely rich art by Brenda Boles who presented at both sessions, Taylor Gutermate and Zbigniew Kozikowski.

Also along for the ride were UC Davis student, Celine Bertero who showed photography from Italy and Shanley Knox, founder of the non-profit, Nakateproject.com, which helps African women attain self sufficiency.

PKN Sacramento Vol. 13

PKN Sacramento Vol. 13

PechaKucha Night in Sacramento Vol. 13 was held earlier this month, and from what organizer Claire Obenson tells us, it was a pretty exciting event, and the first one to happen inside the new expansion of the Crocker Art Museum — it was also part of “Art Mix,” created by Museum Lifetime Learning Coordinator Christian Adame. Don’t believe us? Here’s what presenter Marvin Maldonado had to say:

Without you, I would have probably never had the opportunity to speak at PKN, and especially at the Crocker. I shared the stage with the VP of one of the area’s top firms and other super talented creatives, briefly stated, I was in good company yesterday. I look forward to many more nights of lively discussion and if there’s anything I can assist with in the future, please do not hesitate to contact me…again…thank YOU so much!

PKN Sacramento Goes for the Grandslam

PKN Sacramento

Last week, Sacramento had not one, not two, but rather three PechaKucha Nights in a row, combining volumes 9 through 11 in what organizer Claire Obenson described as “the world’s first ever PK Night Grandslam.”

We had 17 presenters who showed all sorts of work ranging from Product Design (Brian Schmitt) to a 6:40 mins video describing the process of creating a painting (by James Lane) to some cool virtual design work by Justin Wood. Our DJ, Alex Trujillo, an artist extraordinaire himself, greatly enhanced the presentations with his carefully selected music. All our MCs — Jake Favour, James Lane and Scott Vaughn — were top notch.

Jake Favour posts a short review of the events over on his Capital Creative Collective blog.

PKN Sacramento Vol. 8

Last month’s PechaKucha Night in Sacramento Vol. 8 was again held at the Level Up Lounge — here’s hoping plenty of glasses of “The Pecha Kucha” got served — and organizer Claire Obenson sends in this report.

The last PK Night went very well. We had seven presenters (including me) at Level Up Lounge in Sacramento: fashion designer Pamela Desrochers (special guest presenter), designer extraordinaire and Romp Creative co-founder Jake Favour, 19-year-old artist Stephanie Karapinar (our youngest ever presenter), moi, architect and artist Merle Serlin, designer and fisherman Scott Vaughn, and virtual designers Justin & Laura Wood.

PKN, the Drink

Colored Straws

Over the past six years of PechaKucha Night events, there have been countless stabs at PKN cocktails. James Lane sends us this version he spotted at PKN Sacramento:

I’d like to announce that the organizers here in Sacramento, California have designed (and drunk) possibly the first drink called “The Pecha Kucha.” We hold our events at a Thai Lounge and the owner designed it for us. I’m not a bartender so I don’t know all the ingredients, but it involves lighting Bacardi 151 on fire. I told her that since it was for artistic types it should be inventive and cheap.
