Kansas City

The Cocktail Napkin

Here’s a video (part of podcast series) in which a recent presenter in Kansas City covers his presentation, and also interviews fellow participants and attendees. From PKN Kansas City organizer Ryan Townsend:

[Here] is a great video from one of our Kansas City presenters. It’s long — 27 minutes — but he interviews several presenters and a couple of audience members. It also includes his entire presentation, which is sort of about how PechaKucha changed his life. OK, that’s a stretch, but it has inspired him to do a podcast about creativity that is really taking off.

And the next PKN in Kansas City (Vol. 13) is set for August 25 — see the full list of presenters with links on the official event page.

Another PechaKucha Night happening tonight (August 12) is Kansas City’s Vol. 10 — it will be held at the Crosstown Station, and you can find a partial list of presenters with links on the official event page. This is also a good time to point out PKN Kansas City’s Flickr photostream, which includes photos, past event posters, and press articles — here’s a photoset for May’s Vol. 9.

The photo may be on the dark side, but here’s a glimpse of last month’s PechaKucha Night in Kansas City Vol. 8. As organizer Jayne Higdon tells us, the event had “an amazing 300+ crowd” that expressed “a very positive reception for the PK for Haiti initiative.” And don’t forget to check out the “awesome tacos” journey presented by Clifton Alexander (at Vol. 6).

When it comes to the following presentation by Clifton Alexander — presented at PechaKucha Night in Kansas City Vol. 6 — we think the title pretty much says it all: “One man’s epic journey to find awesome tacos.”

Clifton set out on a journey to find the most awesome taco in Kansas. He hit 8 taco joints in 3 hours and ordered 1 taco at each place. Some of the locations were pre-planned and some were randomly selected while driving. He even tried Taco flavored Doritos at Quick Trip.

Even though most of the PechaKucha cities will be represented in some way or another on the 20th, there are still regular PKN events happening throughout the month, each including special presentations and ideas for the reconstruction in Haiti. Pictured above is a card prepared by organizers of PKN Kansas City that was given out at last night’s Vol. 8.

PechaKucha Night in Kansas City organizer Jayne Higdon has returned from an epic journey through China and Nepal, and took the time to claim Everest as a PechaKucha location — here’s the photo to prove it!

PKN Kansas City in the News

Kansas City Star Magazine

PechaKucha Night gets a rather extensive piece in the August 16 edition of the Star Magazine section of the Kansas City Star. You can read the article online here, and PKN Kansas City organizers have put scans of the original article in this Flickr photoset.

PKN Kansas City Vol. 6

PechaKucha Night was back in Kansas City last week for a sixth edition, and as organizer Jayne Higdon tells us, it was a great one.

It was a blast, and we had yet another packed house. Nine presenters entertained the crowd with tales of purposely stained ceramics (lipstick on the rim or a hair on a plate in the glaze), a walk along the city’s major river through sketches, and an essay on how design won’t save the world.

Jeremy Fuksa — a self-described “creative generalist” — gives a funny presentation on the Facebook explosion at PechaKucha Night in Kansas City Vol. 4. “How can you avoid your past on Facebook?” Good question.
