Presentations Today’s two presentations come your way from Koszalin and Dayton. The one from Koszalin is by none other than PKN Koszalin organizer Gall Podlaszewski, and was done as part of our Global Cities Week. So follow Gall as she talks about her city (in Polish), PechaKucha-style. From Dayton, we get beer afficionado Max Spang who in “What the Hell Is Beer?” will go to great lengths to prove just how much he loves beer (and he’s not alone).
Posters
On the poster front today, we’ve added three new ones, including posters for the upcoming collaboration between PKN Istanbul and PKN Yerevan (which this time, is an invitation-only event — pictured above is the poster from the Yerevan side), and the poster for tonight’s PKN Taos Vol. 6, celebrating “the remarkable women of Taos.”
Photos
We’ve started sharing more and more event galleries on our official PechaKucha Night Flickr account — in the past it was only used for our Tokyo events — and here are the latest photosets that have been added. Above, a shot from this month’s PKN Panjim Vol. 2, followed by a look at PKN Washington Vol. 17.
That Toronto set only has 2 photos, but the accordion player you see pictured is Ben Harvey, and he has performed at both Vol. 14 and Vol. 15. Below is a video of Ben in action (recorded/edited by Circuit Bent Media).
Calendar It’s looking like a great Friday, with 5 PechaKucha Nights in the calendar for tomorrow (May 18): PKN Zurich Vol. 11, PKN Varberg Vol. 2, PKN Singapore Vol. 4, PKN Lodz Vol. 8, and PKN Hakata Vol. 2.
Istanbul took part in the Global Cities Week with its PechaKucha Night Vol. 13, and here’s a photo and report on the event, courtesy of PKN Istanbul team member Burçak Konukman. You’ll also find the full list of presenters with links on the official event page.
Istanbul, potential and possibilities for The first PechaKucha Night of 2012 was held on the 23rd of February with 9 presenters coming from different walks of creative industries in town. Presenters elaborated on the theme “Curating Istanbul” to describe potentials, possibilities and also obstacles Istanbul carries for curators and cultural operators. A crowd of 250 participated in the event at the Building Information Center, finding the concept and content “quite nourishing,”as young designer Ufuk Semerci described it.
Fırat Kasapoğlu from Partners, one of the key figures of the cultural industries in Istanbul, focused on the infrastructure of cultural industries and how to improve it. Industrial designer and Director of Istanbul Design Biennial Özlem Yalım Özkaraoğlu shared how the Biennial exhibitions are formed and accompany events during the year. The third speaker was artist Murat Germen, with the presentation “Coping with İstanbul.” Murat Germen’s visuals showed the audience how Istanbul’s architectural fabric has changed over the years. Young fashion designer Benan Bal’s focus was on men’s fashion. The audience got some valuable tips on how to get their looks in 2012.
After the break, artist Candaş Şişman presented the visions they added on the city’s skyline by using video mapping techniques. Art critic Fırat Arapoğlu’s almost-no-budget exhibition “Against Public, For Public” was a good example of collaboration and creativity for developing art projects. The creative director from Mindthead, Genco Demirer, shared dispositions of the Istanbul Architecture Biennial (IIAB) they are planning for 2013. The agenda of the city’s culture and art life was examined by strategist Serdar Paktin. For the last presentation, DJ Orkun Bozdemir from Future Generation shared his experiences in music and the entertainment industry.
Today’s presentation, “Coping with Istanbul,” was recorded at PechaKucha Night in Istanbul Vol. 13 — part of the Global Cities Week — and features Murat Germen covering the changes in Istanbul’s architectural fabric over the years.
The organizers of the upcoming PechaKucha Night in Istanbul Vol. 13 — part of our Global Cities Week — have sent us the following info about the event’s presenters, that we share below. And here’s our previous post, that includes details and the poster for the event.

Curators, artists, cultural operators, editors, festival directors, DJs! People who make us run around the clock not to miss a beat in town and keep us busy all year long with a royal buffet of events in art, culture and entertainment in Istanbul.
What is trendy in Istanbul? Check that out with Benan Bal, fashion designer. What are the latest party trends? Future Generation’s Orkun Bozdemir is in da house.
Keeping up with Istanbul’s agenda is a full time job. Thanks to media who does that on our behalf. Editor Eraslan Sağlam and strategist Serdar Paktin from bugunbugece.com will tell us how.
Being a curator in İstanbul, curating in İstanbul, curating with İstanbul or being curated by İstanbul? Curating an Istanbul of our own? Curating a İstanbul for all? Photographer Murat Germen, video mapping artist Candaş Şişman and curator Fırat Arapoğlu will discuss.
Without them, it would be incomplete: two newcomers to the biennale scene of Istanbul, Design and Architecture. Özlem Yalım Özkaraoğlu, Director of İstanbul Design Biennale and Genco Demirer of İstanbul International Architecture Biennale will take us to a tour.
Where all these take us? What is in the making? Fırat Kasapoğlu of Partners will point the direction for creative industries in Istanbul.

Here’s a first report from the recent collaborative PechaKucha Night between Istanbul and Yerevan, courtesy of PKN Istanbul organizer Nurten Meriçer.
Istanbul and Yerevan organised PechaKucha İstanbul Vol. 12 and PechaKucha Night Yerevan Vol. 10 as a joint event on November 8, Tuesday in Yerevan. 12 presenters addressed an audience of 100 or so in The Club, the venue for PechaKucha Nights in Yerevan. Presentation subjects ranging from architecture to social responsibility were of course interesting for the audience, but probably not as much entertaining as the Comedy Night X. But Can Yücel Metin ve Boghos Yeghyazar, final presenters, had a little surprise for the audience. Please follow the journey of group of 16 composed of Pecha Kucha Night Istanbul Team, presenters and media members to Yerevan and full story of the Night here.
And as promised, here’s a look at the Yerevan poster for the joint PechaKucha Night with Istanbul taking place tomorrow night (November 8) — more details in this post.
Tomorrow night (November 8) is a special PechaKucha Night collaboration indeed, with the cities of Istanbul and Yerevan teaming up for a joint event — PKN Istanbul Vol. 12 and PKN Yerevan Vol. 10. We’ll share the Yerevan poster in a separate post, but here’s a look at the Istanbul one, as well as some details from PKN Istanbul organizer Nurten Meriçer (the list of presenters with links appears on the official event page).
Yerevan-İstanbul, Close Creative Encounters
Although our digitalized world preaches the opposite, nothing compares to face-to-face communication. That is what makes our amazing 450 city PechaKucha family the biggest physical global network of designers and creative people in the world.

Organisers 34solo and the Club expect this joint PechaKucha Night to create new opportunities for presenters and audience to communicate, network and cooperate. PechaKucha Night Yerevan-İstanbul is made possible by Eurasia Foundation.
The journey of 34solo team, presenters and media members to Yerevan and daily diary of the event can be followed here.
