Video Report from Honolulu

We already posted an event review for this month’s PechaKucha Night in Honolulu Vol. 7, but organizer Mark Hakoda just sent us a heads-up on this terrific short documentary on the event, put together by Gerard Elmore. Watching the video, you get to meet all of that night’s presenters, which you’ll find listed on that volume’s event page.

PechaKucha Night in Honolulu Vol. 7 was held earlier this month, and as organizer Mark Hakoda tells us, it was truly a fantastic night. “I was blown away at how diverse and talented the presentations were,” says Mark, adding that they also had their first singing presentation, courtesy of Kenneth Makuakane. “It makes sense since he’s won eleven Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, Hawaii’s equivalent to a Grammy Award.”

The next PechaKucha Night in Honolulu (Vol. 7) is just around the corner, happening this Friday (December 11) at Linekona’s Academy Art Center. The night’s festivities will be accompanied by music from Kenneth Makuakane and DJ Eskae. This will also mark the last PKN Honolulu for Mark Hakoda as head organizer, so if you spot him, make sure to go and thank him for the amazing job he’s done over the past seven volumes.

PKN Honolulu Vol. 6

PechaKucha Night in Honolulu Vol. 6 was held last week, and as organizer Mark Hakoda tells us, it was another terrific showing.

What a great night again, under the stars in Honolulu. Great crowd as usual. We had the largest group of presenters ever at a PKN Honolulu event. I guess we must be catching on. We even had two visiting presenters: Travis Warren, a landscape architect from Vancouver BC, and Michel Tuffery, an artist from New Zealand. They join a growing group of PKN traveling presenters visiting the islands. Dave Pollard from England was our first. I hope this becomes a trend.

With PechaKucha Night in Honolulu Vol. 6 coming up, there’s no better time to take a look back at July’s vol. 6. Organizer Mark Hakoda reports.

What a night! We had one of our biggest crowds — well over 200 people — and I think we have the most welcoming and grateful crowds anywhere. We also had our most diverse group of presenters yet. We had everything: an award winning photographer, a public radio host, a graphic artist, a board member of the American Institute of Architects, a filmmaker, a Scotsman in a kilt, a painter, a corporate brand consultant, a public access TV show host, and a rock band. I’m not sure we could have squeezed in anything else.

Things are really heating up for PechaKucha Night in Honolulu, and organizer Mark Hakoda fills us in on what to expect from next week’s Vol. 6 (September 18).

We have the largest number of presenters we have ever had — 11 presenters will be presenting a wide range of topics, from fashion design to landscape architecture. We are also becoming a destination for visiting artists and PKN faithful. For Vol. 6, we are showcasing two visiting presenters: Michel Tuffery, award winning native artist from New Zealand, and Travis Warren, a landscape architect from Vancouver, Canada. Travis will be presenting a project that is being completed now for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Aloha! PechaKucha Night Honolulu just hit their 5th Volume and from the report that follows from Mark Hakoda it seems they will soon be at volume 10! At PechaKucha HQ here in Tokyo we are getting more and more e-mails from people that are planning their vacations around PechaKucha Nights in cities they are visiting so they can attend or even present. From the look of the photos below Honolulu may be one of the top PechaKucha ‘destinations’.

Open Air PKN in Honolulu

PKN Honolulu Vol. 4

PechaKucha Night in Honolulu Vol. 4 was held a couple of weeks ago, and from the photos I’m seeing in this Flickr photoset, I’m getting really jealous of open air PKN events — see photos from last month’s edition of PKN San Francisco for more evidence.

I now dream of a PKN Tokyo with a backdrop of pink sakura.
