Barcelona

More Magazine Library, a 3000-seat Venue for Koszalin, and a ‘Raucous’ Night in Nishinomiya

Let’s take a look at what’s happening in PechaKucha today.

Presentations
As we promised yesterday, we continue to share presentations from last Friday’s special PechaKucha event at the Magazine Library exhibition. Today you can hear Antonin Gaultier talk about his new digital Tokyo fashion magazine, De Rigueur (available for Kindle), and Tokyo-based designer Ian Lynam shares some of the magazine titles that have had a big impact on him.

PKN Koszalin Vol. 9

Posters
Two new posters today on our Tumblr blog, starting with the one (above) for the upcoming PKN Koszalin Vol. 9 (on May 25). You see a piece of the amazing venue where it will be held in it, and below, a better look. You’ll also find the beautifully illustrated poster for PKN Barcelona Vol. 16.

PKN Koszalin Vol. 9

It’s the Koszalin Amphitheatre, and it can hold 3000 spectators — that’s PKN Tel Aviv territory!

PKN Beirut Vol. 8

Events
We of course have a few new galleries of event photos to point out, and the photo above is an oldie but goodie, from PKN Beirut Vol. 8 (the most recent event in that city was last week’s Vol. 14).

Here we have a report from PKN Nishinomiya organizer Brent Jones on the city’s recent PKN Vol. 12:

Friday, April 13 (that’s right . . . Friday the 13th) was another raucous night of creativity and fun at CUBE in Nishinomiya. We continue to attract an eclectic mix of presenters, and this beautiful Spring night was no exception. We started the evening by showing Mark Dytham’s PechaKucha Global Events presentation from the PKN website. We explained to the audience that we are locked into our set events (because our venue is a school), but that we try to promote these events as much as we can. Our first live presenter was Teruko Ashida, who introduced her organic fruit farm in Amagasaki and the events she holds there. Peter Sterlacci followed up with a lively introduction to Personal Branding. Shuji Narita came next with a humorous look at common English mistakes made by Japanese, and he was followed by Carmen Tamas and Shawn White swapping musings about the charms of Japan and Romania. Our Beer Break was followed by a PKN formatted workshop on Old School Hip Hop by Warren Decker. Natsuko Shiraishi then introduced her work with groups of indigenous Mangyan on the island of Mindoro in the Philippines. The audience was then treated to the trials and tribulations of learning how to scull by Richard Miller, and Wes Lang rounded out the night with a poetic look at Unkai, or the sea of clouds that can be viewed from various summits in Japan. We again enlisted the help of several students in introducing the presenters and keeping the evening full of unexpected twists and turns, and are already looking forward to PKN Nishinomiya Volume 13 on July 6th.

Calendar
As we mentioned yesterday, tonight (May 15) you can look forward to PKN Helsingborg Vol. 8, and then tomorrow night (May 16) Wagga Wagga will be hosting its PKN Vol. 6.

Bulldog & Tulip

Bulldog & Tulip

The life of a freelancer is not always an easy one, as Gary van Broekhoven’s tale reveals. In “Bulldog & Tulip,” he shares his experience about coming to Barcelona to work as a freelancer, and how this often meant having to work for free. It was recorded at PechaKucha Night in Barcelona Vol. 14.

ARQUITECTURA Y ETC.

ARQUITECTURA Y ETC.

We weren’t able to share this in time, but above is the invitation produced for a special PechaKucha event in Barcelona, that inolved regular PKN Barcelona organizer, Marc Morro. Here’s more info from Marc on what the event was all about:

In between PechaKucha Night BCN Vol. 15 and Vol. 16, ETSAB (Architecture School from Barcelona) asked us to organize a PechaKucha at their university. And we did it. ARQUITECTURA AND ETC., an event with the PechaKucha format that had 9 talkers, all of them architects, selected by ETSAB and just a few talked about architecture. There presenters were: Jan Roig, Margalida Montoya y Arcadi Royo, Vicenç Mulet, Óscar Engroba + Ana Roque, Eugeni Bach, Xavier Bustos, Juan Beldarrain, Josep Bunyesc y Uriel Fogué.

Here’s a photo from a one-off PechaKucha event that was held in Barcelona. Called ”Exploring outside the frame”, it was organized by Sergi Lopez-Grado Padreny and coordinated by the Anna Manyes, both architects and members of AuS, the Architecture and Sustainability Group of the College of Architects of Catalonia – they are both pictured in the photo above, and there more photos to see here.

Video on PKN Barcelona Vol. 15

Couldn’t attend Barcelona’s PechaKucha Night Vol. 15? Here’s a really fantastic video that gives you a nice taste of the event and the presenters. We really love the part where each presenter introduces himself/herself, passing the mic around the screen. Yes, the video is in Spanish, but it’s still well worth watching if you don’t understand the language. This was a Global Cities Week event, and you’ll find all of the presenters with links listed on the official event page.

Barcelona will be a part of our upcoming Global Cities Week, with its PechaKucha Night Vol. 15 planned for February 24 at the Antiga Fabrica Estrella Damm. You’ll find the full list of presenters with links on the official event page. The poster was designed by Bendita Gloria Studio.

A Goodbye Message from Petz Scholtus

PKN Barcelona Vol. 14

As we mentioned in that previous post about PechaKucha Night in Barcelona Vol. 14, it was the last edition for organizer Petz Scholtus (again, pictured above, in a photo by Benjamin Julve), and she sends in the following goodbye message to the PechaKucha community:

I just want to send out a huge thank you to everyone who made PechaKucha Barcelona what it is today. It has been an incredible adventure to set up and run PKN in the Catalan Capital with the support of my friends, the over 170 presenters, fans, and our audience. I had a lot of fun, met amazing people and have seen curious things in the 3 years of PKN BCN. Mark, Astrid, Jean and everyone else at PK headquarters were incredible to work with, as were Sergio Carratalá, Ernest Vidal, Benjamin Julve, Ricardo Ferraz, Aurora Portillo, Aniol Esquerra, Nayely González and Marjolein Hendrix in Barcelona. Together we did over 14 nights since July 2008 when it all started here. Also on board since the beginning was our local beer, Estrella Damm, whose Antigua Fábrica has somewhat become the house of PechaKucha in Barcelona.

They say that all good things must end (I am hoping to present my new project to you in a PKN next year) and so I decided to pass on PKN BCN to the hyperactiveee Marc Morro, known as the guy behind Surtido and the Gallery Otras Cosas. I am very pleased to leave it in Marc’s hands and am looking forward to the events next year.

Fins aviat,
Petz Scholtus

PKN Barcelona Vol. 14

PKN Barcelona Vol. 14

Pictured above, that’s Petz Scholtus, who has been the amazing organizer of PechaKucha Night in Barcelona since its start, and the recent Vol. 14 marked her final edition as organizer. Don’t fret, the PKN Barcelona will continue under the guidance of Marc Morro, and here’s a report from Petz. All photos in this post are by Benjamin Julve, and there’s more to see in this Flickr photoset.

The old beer brewery of Estrella Damm was packed once again last friday night for the 14th PechaKucha Night in Barcelona. Those that managed to get in could enjoy the 11 presentations while drinking beer and eating delicious stuffed potatoes. Amongst others we had Rafa Bonichon explaining why Mad Men is dead, and Marga and Arcadi told the story of their Barcelona pins that got banned by the City Council. Gary van Broekhoven convinced us that creative people should never work for free and our photographer Benjamin Julve did a ‘behind the scene’ presentation about the last 3 years of PechaKucha in Barcelona. More information, videos and photos can be found on our local blog.

Poster for PKN Barcelona Vol. 14

Here’s a look at the poster for the upcoming PechaKucha Night in Barcelona Vol. 14, designed by Ernest Vidal. Set for November 25, it will be held at the Antigua Fabrica Estrella Damm, and you’ll find the list of presenters with links on the official event page. You could call this a very special event, in that it will be the last one organized by Petz Scholtus, who has been one of our biggest PechaKucha cheerleaders over the years, and we’re all very sad to see her move on — but please note that PKN Barcelona will indeed continue, and we’ll have more details to share on that soon.

TecnoCampus x PechaKucha

Tecnocampus x PechaKucha

As you know, on top of our regular city-based PechaKucha Night series, we do support more and more one-off PechaKucha events, like this one to be held in Barcelona on November 16. PKN Barcelona organizer Petz Scholtus is involved, and she sends in the following details:

TecnoCampus in Mataró, a seaside town north of Barcelona, is hosting a special PechaKucha event to give start-ups and young entrepreneurs a chance to show their projects. Speakers include a Cyborg, a 360º photographer, a butterfly farmer and a crowdfunding organiser amongst others. There will be plenty of Estrella Damm beers during the networking break in the unique settings of TecnoCampus, so come along if you can!
