Aalen

Rethinking Design, Some Animation Love, and the Aalen Poster Explosion

Presentations
Doreen Toutikian thinks that design can change the world for the better, and that’s what she hopes to achieve with her “Rethinking Design Through Cross-Cultural Collaboration” project — see her describe it in this presentation from PKN Beirut Vol. 13. Sebastian Alvarez loves animation, and that could help explain how he ended up becoming an animator. He uses this presentation (from PKN Miami Vol. 14) to describe the main principles behind animation, and shows how all animated forms (2D, CG) can be used to tell stories in original and creative ways.

PKN Aalen Vol. 2

Posters
We found this Facebook gallery of posters for Aalen’s past PKNs, and so have added a few of them (the ones we’d never seen before) to our Tumblr blog – and that’s the one for PKN Aalen Vol. 2 you see pictured above. We’ve also added the poster for this week’s PKN Portland, Maine Vol. 19 — next up for the city is the momentous Vol. 20!

PKN Maribor Vol. 7

Photos
Today’s photo galleries, as well as an event report. The photo above is from PKN Maribor Vol. 7.

PKN Sacramento organizer Claire Obenson reports on the city’s recent Vol. 17:

There were presentations from creative professions across the spectrum, such as a playwright, David Blue Garrison, host of the event, who showed posters of his work; there was Andrea Lepore, the creative director for a well known restaurant, Hot Italian, who showed her plans for a well known strip, called Del Paso Blvd; we had Melissa Magliola who showed off her new company, Compliment Rings, whose proceeds “give back” to the community; Veronica Delgado, the great publicist and Artist Agent showed off her endeavours and volunteering efforts; Famed architect, Owen T. Jones presented images about “inside versus outside” spaces; Dennis Dong, another famed architect and PK Night veteran presenter showed off his anonymous spaces and lastly, Marvin Maldonado presented images from his wife’s new boutique, Gypsy Mobile Boutique, Sacramento’s first mobile boutique.

Overall, this was one of the most interesting PK Nights we have ever held and thanks to all who participated!

Calendar
Tonight (May 22) you’ll find your PKN action in Montreal (Vol. 22), Dnipropetrovsk (Vol.1), and Dundee (Vol. 3), while tomorrow (May 23) you can look to these events for some PKN satisfaction: PKN Prague Vol. 29, PKN Ekaterinburg Vol. 3, PKN Leksand Vol. 4, and PKN Copenhagen’s very special Vol. 20.

Tokyo via Aalen

Tokyo via Aalen

Franziska Helmle lived and worked for 3 years in Japan, and in “Tokyo,” she tells us why she still loves Japan and the city of Tokyo, talking about the people, the food, and the nature that surrounded her. It was recorded at PechaKucha Night in Aalen Vol. 10, and is in German.

300 at PKN Aalen Vol. 10

PKN Aalen Vol. 10

We’ve already shared with you photos from the recent PechaKucha Night in Aalen Vol. 10, but we found this extra photo that shows the audience from a different angle, giving a nicer perspective on just how many people attended (over 300).

PKN Aalen Vol. 10

The city of Aalen had a very successful PechaKucha Night Vol. 10, and here are a few photos to give you an idea of what the event looked like, as well as a few words from organizer Thomas Maile. We also include two scans of some newspaper articles the event got, and you’ll find all the presenters listed on the event page.

On March 2 we had a great event, the biggest one we ever had, with about 300 people in attendance. We are a small town, with 65.000 citizens, and so 300 is really great for us. One wonderful presentation was by Franziska Helmle about Tokyo, because she lived 4 years there. Altogether we had 12 presenters and the funky band RENATES.

PKN Aalen in the News

PKN Aalen in the News

Good to see PechaKucha Night in Aalen in the news again, this time with a piece (”Auf den Punkt gebracht”) in the Schwabische Post — you can read it online here (in German). Aalen just recently had its PKN Vol. 10, and Vol. 11 is already set for May 3.

Aalen unfortunately won’t be able to take part in our Global Cities Week because of the city’s carnival season, but it will have a PechaKucha Night (Vol. 10) soon after, on March 2 at Autohaus Widmann + Müller. You’ll find the full list of presenters with links on the official event page.

PKN Aalen Vol. 8

PKN Aalen Vol. 8

Here’s a look at Aalen’s PechaKucha Night Vol. 8, held earlier this month, as well as a report from organizer Thomas Maile. Please note that PKN Aalen Vol. 9 is taking place tomorrow tonight (November 22) at Hochschule Aalen — see the official event page for more details.

The PechaKucha team/organizer from Aalen welcomed at their last event on the 11th November/11.11.11 not only 12 amazing speakers but also 150 vistors.

In the pleasant atmosphere of the restaurant FREUDENSCHAMUS and the musical accompaniment of the band SAXMANIA enraptured young and old PechaKucha fans. The PKN in Aalen gives different people the opportunity to speak about different topics, similar to the famous “Speakers Corner” in London. So there has been a successful (gelungen) mix of topics such as visual arts projects, interesting books, music, hair, child care and prevention. For the last presentation, the speaker introduced the audience to body art: Body-Painting. This presentation involved an impressive surprise: a body-painting model, which was airbrushed by the speaker himself.

PKN Aalen Vol. 5

PKN Aalen Vol. 5

The other day we mentioned how the next PechaKucha Night in Aalen was going to be a special edition featuring a few candidates for upcoming elections, and organizer Thomas Maile tells us it ended up being a wonderful evening.

We had 250 people who visited our event, and on top of that 400 visitors joined through our live stream. The 20×20 format is not normal for politicians, but the candidates for our house of parliament did a good job. As you can see in the photo, political speeches can be really funny.

Also, here’s a report on the event from the Schwabische Post, and you’ll find video of the presentations here. And again, please note that the next PKN in Aalen (Vol. 6) is set for March 25 — more details here.

Candidates to Use the PechaKucha Format

Who says the 20×20 PechaKucha format can’t work for politicians? PechaKucha Night in Aalen organizer Thomas Maile sends word of an interesting use of the format, read more below:

In our part of Germany, Baden-Württemberg, we have in a few weeks an election for a new parliament. For our home region, we have five candidates who are vying to become a member of parliament. Through our local newspaper, we are organizing a PechaKucha Night for politics. All the candidates will give a PechaKucha presentation to talk about their views and their party. Following the presentations, we are planning a discussion session with visitors.

The event happens this coming Monday (February 28) — here’s the event page, and here are more details in German, as published in the Schwabische Post. And take note that the next regular PKN in Aalen, Vol. 6, will happen on March 25 at Freudenschmaus — you’ll find the full list of presenters with links on the official event page.
